Seth is the oldest of 5 kids, an avid list maker, husband and father of two kids. He grew up in Western Canada moving from small town to small town, attended 10 different schools in 12 years and spent a semester at Grant Macewan studying General Studies. In his early years, he was passionate about sports broadcasting and originally wanted to pursue a career in radio but ended up getting into the workforce and never looked back.
In his early to mid 20’s he did pretty much every labourer role there is: underground sprinkler fitting, chain link fencing, snow removal, welders helper, bobcat operator, diamond drillers helper, hydro-vac operator among other things.
There were times where he considered getting a trade or class one driver’s license but none of that felt right. Then he got his first leadership role, managing a maintenance crew at a small golf course. That summer was the beginning of an accelerated journey from front line labourer to corporate executive in less than 5 years.
Leadership Development – The Pivot
Ultimately, Seth decided to pursue a trade in the winter of 2010 and get into Telecommunications. Unbeknownst to him at the time, this would set off a chain of events that would lead to relocating from Wainwright to Calgary, leading large teams across Canada and driving transformational programs.
Simultaneously to the career change, he volunteered to be the General Manager of the Wainwright Bisons Junior B Hockey team which would provide an opportunity to learn the art of building a team, the importance of community involvement and many transferable leadership lessons that would help in the years ahead.
Between 2010 – 2015, Seth was promoted 3 times from Technican → Field Support Manager → Operations Manager → Director. With the Bisons, he played an integral role in reviving the Bisons from an average team into a Junior B powerhouse that would go onto win league, provincial and western canadian championships in the years following his tenure.
Seth was recognized for his leadership efforts during this time winning two corporate leadership awards for demonstrating passion for growth and leadership excellence. As well, he was the first winner of the Ross Perkins award presented by the Wainwright Bisons as a builder and leader.
Becoming a Leader – Sustainable Growth
Over the past 5 years, Seth has managed several different complex portfolios and been accountable to deliver on cost efficiency programs, team member engagement and customer experience outcomes.
Currently, he is passionately driving a digital transformation program, actively supporting his team on mental health and wellness and mentoring other leaders on how to achieve their career goals.
He has also gone on a personal journey over the past two years where he has taken his personal health more seriously and taken steps to build new habits. In that process he has lost +80 pounds, become a much more present father and husband and found new inspiration to become a better leader for the teams he supports at work.
Aspirations – What’s Next?
Growth. In the weeks, months and years ahead, Seth aspires to grow as a leader, student and person. To accomplish this, he spends the bulk of his free time reading, walking his dog (Blue Jay), spending quality time with his family, exercising and diving into self paced learning environments like MasterClass.
He recently moved to Redwood Meadows to reconnect with nature and is looking forward to spending the summer hiking, fishing and mountain biking. Additionally, he is committed to working with JP to grow the Biz Dojo to be a trusted brand for great leadership content in the years to come!
